Ten Tips for Safe Toddler Toy Buying

Bookmark and Share

With so many choices available, buying the right toy for your toddler can be a tricky task. The most important criterion to consider before making your selection is SAFETY! Below you will find 10 great tips to consider before purchasing a toy for your toddler.

1.

Make sure the toy is age appropriate by checking the age recommendation on the product label.

2.

Stay away from small or removable parts that could present a choking, aspiration or ingestion hazard.

3.

Avoid toys with strings or cords as this can be a strangulation hazard.

4.

Check the label to ensure the toy is non-toxic.

5.

Steer clear of toys with sharp edges since toddlers have a tendency to put things in their mouths or near their eyes.

6.

Do not give your child old toys that may not meet the current lead paint standards.

7.

Throw away any plastic packaging materials as these can be a suffocation hazard.

8.

Be sure to clean all toys with a mild soap and water before allowing your toddler to play with it.

9.

Keep the toys of your older child out of the reach of your toddler as these toys are not age appropriate.

10.

Make sure the toy has not been recalled. (See our “Most Recent Infant and Child Product Recalls” article for a current list.)
