Pregnancy Risk Factors

From the moment you found out that you are expecting, you have wanted to do everything you can to protect this little one and help him/her grow healthy and strong. Congratulations! There's nothing like the journey of pregnancy, and investing your time and love into it will be well worth it. As you enter into this adventure, you will encounter lots of information about what and what not to do and when and when not to do it. Don't be worried or overwhelmed; here are the basics to get you started in protecting you and your unborn child:

If you drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes, stop now. Additionally, be cautious of being nearby others when they are smoking.

If you need a cup of java to get your day started, don't fear. You can keep up this daily habit; just go easy after one cup. Consider decaffeinated; or better yet, enjoy a nice cold cup of water.

Enjoy swimming; it's a great form of exercise and relaxing too. However, refrain from hot pools, such as saunas and hot tubs.

Do you love to play sports? Keep playing! With your doctor's approval, staying involved (paying attention to safety of course!) is a great way to stay fit during pregnancy.

Need to schedule an appointment with your dentist or other physician? Be sure to disclose your pregnancy. Generally, pregnant women are recommended to pass on such procedures as x-rays, which may provide radiation exposure.

Are you a cleaning machine? As you clean your home and/or work outside in the yard, be mindful if you use any chemicals. Consider natural alternatives, and be sure to work in well-ventilated areas.

There are many items that may provide risk to you and your unborn child. If in doubt, ask your doctor. As moms have always said, "it's better to be safe than sorry!"
