Help with Hemorrhoids

Bookmark and Share| |

Hemorrhoids are a common nuisance during pregnancy. They often resolve on their own, but there are some steps that you can take to get some relief!

What exactly are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are actually swollen blood vessels. These swollen blood vessels can expand to the size of a grape. And if you've ever had hemorrhoids, you know that they can be itchy and painful and can even cause rectal bleeding.

What causes hemorrhoids?

During pregnancy, the blood return from the lower half of your body is slower due to added pressure on a large vein called the vena cava. This can increase the pressure on the veins bellow your uterus, resulting in hemorrhoids. Constipation and straining during bowel movements can also result in hemorrhoids. Similarly, pushing during labor can be another culprit.

How can hemorrhoids be prevented?

  • Keep the pressure off! - Avoid sitting and standing for long periods of time.

  • Fiber - Constipation is a major cause of hemorrhoids. Eating a diet that is high in fiber can help ward off constipation.

  • Hydration - If you drink plenty of fluids you are also less likely to become constipated.

  • Kegel Exercises - These exercises which strengthen the muscles of your pelvic floor not only help to prepare you for labor, but they also strengthen the muscles around your anus and increase circulation in that area, which can prevent hemorrhoids.

What can I do if I have hemorrhoids?

If you are experiencing pain or itching from hemorrhoids, relief is possible. Below you will find some helpful tips for dealing with your hemorrhoids.

  • Sitz Bath - A sitz bath is a small plastic container that you can place on your toilet. It holds warm water that you sit in.

  • Pre-moistened wipes - Keep your rectum clean by using pre-moistened wipes after each bowel movement. These wipes also provide less resistance than dry toilet paper. Remember to be gentle!

  • Ice packs - A cold treatment with a soft covering several times a day can decrease swelling and discomfort.

  • Witch Hazel - You can find this remedy in your local drug store or supermarket. Compresses soaked in this liquid can provide some relief.

  • Topical Medications - Be sure to check with your healthcare provider before using any creams or anesthetics.

If you have continued discomfort and can't seem to find any relief, it is best to contact your doctor. Don't worry; hemorrhoids clear up after delivery for most women. If not, there are doctors who specialize in treating hemorrhoids that will be able to help you.
