Eat, Drink (Lots of Fluids that is!) & Be Merry
Author: Jeannie Fleming-Gifford
You may be hungry one minute and queasy the next at the sight of food. Welcome to pregnancy! Although you may not even have a baby bump to show quite yet, there is plenty going on in your body. Whether you want to eat everything in sight or nothing at all, this is a crucial time to take good care of yourself and the child growing inside of you.
When you first find out you are pregnant, you may rejoice at the thought of eating for two. Before you run out for an ice cream cake to celebrate, take into account what you are eating and the benefits those calories will have for your baby. Unfortunately, not all calories are good calories. Choose foods that are nutrient rich and will benefit you and your baby.
Be sure to eat well and eat often. As you grow into your pregnancy (no pun intended!), you may find there is not quite as much room in your stomach as there used to be. As the baby grows and takes up more room, you might find that you get fuller faster. Think about eating smaller meals or snacks more often. Six small meals will help you maintain your energy and keep you feeling satisfied throughout your pregnancy.
Worried about gaining weight? Get over it. You’ve got a little “bean” in your belly that is growing. This doesn’t mean you should run out to your favorite restaurants and indulge, but it does mean that your body will change. Embrace it, enjoy it and celebrate it. These new curves won’t be here forever, and though it may take some time, with diet and exercise they will disappear fairly soon after delivery.
If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed or unsure about a good diet for pregnancy, be sure to talk with your doctor. The basics of good nutrition during pregnancy are to eat well, drink plenty of fluids (think water!), and take care of yourself, ensuring you are getting enough rest. Think about making it a family affair. Pregnancy is a wonderful time to reevaluate your family’s diet and exercise programs. Make a commitment to do it together. Many of the good habits needed for a healthy pregnancy are the same habits needed for a healthy life.
