What to expect from labor

Pregnancy and labor are a very special stage in a woman's life. The trouble is that although it's completely natural not many people know what is going to happen. That's why we've created this guide to show you what to expect from labor.

First and foremost, pregnancy and labor are very demanding on the woman's body. There are many changes, both physical and hormonal, which can put stresses on any relationship.

It's important that the mother joins childbirth classes so that she can be sure what she needs to do. These classes can be a great way to learn about pains, the stages of labor, and pain management.

What to Expect from Labor

Every pregnancy is different, and this means that labor will feel different for every woman. It's difficult to predict anything. Just because you have been told a due date by your doctor, it doesn't actually mean that your baby has the same plans.

There are however some signs that you can use to decide whether or not you are in labor. If you're not sure then you can discuss things with your doctor.

During the 9 months of the average pregnancy there are some major changes for both the fetus and mother. Few mothers look forward to giving birth. They may look forward to seeing their new baby, however the actual process of labor is daunting for many. It's a good idea to discuss pain with your doctor so that you can prepare yourself.

The first stage of labor will start with contractions, it ends when the cervix is open fully. This can be painful sometimes. As labor progresses the contractions will get stronger and closer together.

During labor, the health of both mother and baby is monitored. Most people will deliver naturally using drugs to control the pain.

If there are complications, or if the doctor believes it will be better for you or the baby, you may go with the cesarean option instead, which involves you being surgically opened and the baby removed. The best thing to do is to discuss your options with your doctor far in advance, and know why either of these options may be the better plan.
