What to Look for When Purchasing a Bassinet

In the first few months of your infant's life, you may prefer to have them sleep in a bassinet before they transition to their larger crib. Bassinets offer several advantages for a newborn. A bassinet may be more comfortable for your tiny infant, and since your baby will be spending much of his or her first few months asleep, this portable bed may make your days (and nights) easier.

When shopping for a bassinet there may be many attractive and stylish options, especially when shopping online. Bassinets usually start at about $100, but there are many more expensive models depending on the design. Keep in mind that whatever the price-range, there are several key features that you should check for to make sure your baby is safe while asleep in their bassinet.

  • Be sure the mattress fits the bassinet tightly. You shouldn't be able to fit your fingers between the mattress and the bassinet.
  • Run your hands along the interior and exterior of the bassinet to check for sharp or jagged protrusions.
  • Test the base! Make sure it is sturdy.
  • Is the stand stable? Do folding legs have a locking mechanism? If it has wheels, do the wheels have brakes?
  • Are all the screws tight? Can they be adjusted and tightened after purchase?
  • Is all bedding removable? Quilts and blankets can be extremely dangerous for your newborn and should be removed from the bassinet before use.

Some other bassinet features that are not necessary, but may make your baby (and essentially you) more comfortable are listed below.

  • Does it have a vibrating mechanism? This can be very calming and soothing for your baby.
  • Can it play music? Again, this can soothe an upset baby and help him or her fall asleep.
  • Is there a mobile attached? When you first bring your baby home, chances are they will not notice a mobile because their eyesight is not that good yet. However, a month or so down the road, your baby most likely will become very interested in it, especially if it has lights.

Buying a bassinet from a trusted retailer is a good start, but it is always important to check the individual item that you are bringing into your home. The best way to keep your baby safe and happy is to test the bassinet with your own two hands!
