Juggling…Success Wearing Multiple Hats

Whatever the reason you choose to work outside the home, you may find yourself struggling to juggle all the responsibilities that come from these dual roles. One moment you have on the "hat" of mom and in a blink of an eye, you are expected to be a professional in the workplace. You may struggle with keeping it all together. Isn't it reassuring to know you are not alone?

Can you have it all? Can you be a great parent and have a career? Can you make both happen?

Absolutely!

There is no magic to making it happen and it may not always be easy. But, it can occur.

When balancing career and parenthood, it's important to be flexible and responsive to the needs of both your family and your job (in that order). Realize that some days are going to be more challenging than others. Realize that some days you are not going to be able to get everything done. Some days, you may not get anything done!

With that said, there are many things you can do to be successful "wearing multiple hats."

  1. Be organized. In order to make your life work, both inside and outside the home, you will need a plan of action. This includes preparation for the care of your child in your absence, as well as taking care of the logistics that will make the household function smoothly (i.e. meal planning in advance). You will also need to be organized within your career. Take time to prioritize projects and make a plan of action to "get your job done" within the time and resources available.
  2. Communicate. This is vital within your family, especially with your partner. Be honest and upfront regarding current work responsibilities, how these may impact your family and what you will need to do as a team to make you successful in both roles. Use your resources and ask for help when you need it.
  3. Be prepared to work hard. As a professional, you are hired to get a job done within a company. Unfortunately, even as a mom, you cannot make excuses such as "being tired" as to why you are not completing tasks. Moms have been working for many years. You are not alone. Be upfront with your employer, (as appropriate) regarding any challenges you face in getting your job done. Look for solutions that will best meet the needs of the employer and of you (i.e. working from home, job sharing, flexible hours, etc.).
  4. Keep your identity no matter what "hat" you are wearing. One minute you are a mom. The next, you are a professional. Embrace your roles and be flexible about what is needed at the time.
  5. Don't forget the essentials: flexibility, humor, commitment, and passion. Carry these with you in whatever role you face today! If you do, you will be sure to "enjoy the ride" and be successful no matter what "hat" you are wearing.
