Cheap-o Baby Gear

If you're planning on being thrifty with your baby necessities, there are a lot of great opportunities out there for you to get great stuff at low prices - and sometimes free!

Buy off-season: You can find spectacular deals when you shop off-season. That means in February or March, you are shopping for winter gear. Granted, the selection is probably a little picked over, but you'll find some gems that are a fraction of the original price. Downside? You will have to guess at sizes. So, you may get stuck with a few items that don't fit when the time comes, but you could also hit the jackpot.

Consignment stores: Consignment stores, or second-hand stores, can also be a great place to find baby gear at low prices. Some consignment stores specialize in baby items, from strollers to onsies. Most consignment stores only take items in good shape, too. If you're looking for larger ticket items, though, like changing tables, swings, or pack n' plays, be sure to check Consumer Reports first for recall notices on older items.

Garage sales: Garage sales can be hit or miss when it comes to finding good loot, but it can also be a fun way to spend a morning. You can be a little voyeuristic and look through people's stuff, and you can possibly load up on toys, clothes, and other items. Again, check Consumer Reports if you're looking for items with possible safety issues, such as cribs.

Swap: Swapping with a friend or co-worker is also a great way to save money. You'll find that when your children get a little older, you will want to weed out your loads of baby gear to make room for… well, loads of toddler gear. Other people are in the same position. And if you have multiple children, possibly of opposite sex, a swap can be a valuable option. Make it an event, and invite all the parents you know.

You don't have to break the bank when stocking up for a new baby. And even if there are things you want to purchase brand new and "on-season," there may be some things you can obtain second-hand or on the clearance rack. Save your money for their college education - you'll need it!
