Halloween with Baby

Happy Halloween! Having a baby brings fun and excitement as you have the opportunity to experience the fun of each holiday with your child. Additionally, each holiday is a time to create memories and establish traditions. And, this Halloween is no exception!
Are you ready for Halloween fun?
Here are a few guidelines that will help ensure a safe and happy Halloween for baby and you!
- Dressing up baby in costume? Think simple, safe and practical. When choosing a costume, keep in mind the comfort and safety of your baby. Consider a costume that will not inhibit your baby's movement. Additionally, due to the sensitivity of a baby's skin, it is best to refrain from use of any type of costume make-up. Before dressing baby up, be sure to have washed the costume to avoid skin irritation.
- Make Halloween a developmentally appropriate experience for your baby. Your baby may be smiling and may even be on the go. However, they most likely are not ready to experience some of what Halloween has to offer. Babies do not understand the concept of costumes or that a person may be behind a scary mask. Babies may also have a difficult time understanding spooky sounds. For this reason, you may need to carefully consider taking baby out to partake of Halloween festivities. This doesn't mean you can't participate in Halloween fun, it simply means to look for family-friendly outings.
- Although it's a special occasion, your baby may still function best with their typical routines - specifically, eating and sleeping. Prepare and create your plans accordingly.
- Babies don't need chocolate or any other sweet treats. There will be many years to come when your child will be ready to enjoy all the sweet things associated with Halloween. This isn't the time. If you are breastfeeding, also be conscious of food and drink you are consuming as well.
- There are plenty of festivities that baby can enjoy. This may include helping to paint a pumpkin (be sure to use non-toxic, washable paint) and enjoying the other elements of fall (i.e. a walk in the cool air, exploring the fall sensory sensations - crisp leaves, straw, etc.).
- Don't forget the camera! Don't be surprised if baby only lasts a few minutes in a costume. It's okay - enjoy the moment and don't' forget to get a few shots of this first Halloween.
Have a spooktacular Halloween!
