Baby Nail Care
Author: Angela Heidt
Taking care of your baby's nails is something that many parents tend to overlook in the first few months of life, which is understandable since they have more important things to worry about. However, at some point your little one will take a swipe at you, and you'll quickly find out how sharp those little buggers are. It is at this point that parents begin to take a look at how to take care of their baby's nails.
For the most part, baby nail care is pretty easy - when they get long enough to scratch, you, cut them. Now, while that sounds straightforward, for many parents and babies this can become an epic battle for control. They see you coming with the clippers and start thrashing around, and you are too worried about making a mistake and hurting them to do it. This is the start of a life-long fight for control which you probably won't win, but with a little creativity, you can at least get their nails done.
First, you need to set an example. If your child thinks that this newly designed torture is just for them, they will certainly resist. Show them that it's okay by clipping your own nails in front of them. After you are done, tell them it is their turn. For the first few attempts, you probably just want to clip one nail and be done, with lots of praise of course.
Generally, most kids will come around, especially if Mom, Dad, or an older sibling are doing it as well. If this method doesn't work though, you will have to be stealthier. Carry a pair of clippers with you in the car or stroller, and take the opportunity when they are asleep. Once they get old enough to catch onto what you are doing, they likely won't think it's a big deal anymore.
One more thing: baby nail cutters are extremely sharp, and at some point, you may accidentally get some skin. Do not worry; nearly every parent has done this at some time. Just place a tissue over the affected area and apply some pressure to stop any bleeding. Remember, you'll get better with a little practice!
